Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Roux

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  2. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until the mixture turns golden and smooth.

Step 2: Add the Milk

  1. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  2. Continue to cook for 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.

Step 3: Melt the Cheese

  1. Reduce the heat to low and gradually stir in the shredded cheese.
  2. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, mustard powder, and cayenne pepper if using.
  3. Stir until the cheese melts completely and the sauce is smooth.

Step 4: Serve
